About the Event
Juneteenth is a holiday that commemorates the end of slavery in the United States.
It marks June 19, 1865, the day when Union soldiers arrived in Galveston, Texas, and announced that enslaved African Americans were free — more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation had been issued by President Abraham Lincoln.
